Common Causes and Rejection Codes

The following are some of the most common types of errors:

Mismatched Personal Information

The taxpayer's personal information does not match the information on file with the Social Security Administration. This is the most common reason for a return being refused. The taxpayer's or their spouse's information, such as their SSN, name, or birth date, is either wrong or does not match what the IRS expects.

Previously Accepted Return

Someone else has already e-filed a return using the identical taxpayer identification number (Social Security Number or Tax Identification Number). This is most commonly due to a taxpayer or spouse having already e-filed a return for the current year. This can also happen if the taxpayer or spouse is a victim of identity theft.

Dependent Claimed On Another Return

A taxpayer claims a dependent who is likewise claimed on the return of another taxpayer. This might happen when there is confusion or a lack of communication between custodial and non-custodial parents or guardians over who is entitled to the dependent.

Dependent Files Own Return

Taxpayers previously submitted a tax return for the year, either for themselves using the personal exemption or for those who claimed them as a dependent.

EIN Does Not Match

Taxpayers previously submitted a tax return for the year, either for themselves using the personal exemption or for those who claimed them as a dependent.
